ST Electronics bags $36m Taipei subway contract

THE electronics arm of Singapore Technologies Engineering (ST Engg) has won a $36 million contract to design and install communication systems for Taipei's Songshan and Xinyi mass rapid transit (MRT) lines.

The systems will be integrated into existing systems of the Red/Green Line network at an existing Operation Control Centre, and will help 'facilitate an efficient, reliable and safe mode of transportation in Taipei', said Singapore Technologies Electronics (ST Electronics).

ST Electronics will start work on the 6.4 km Xinyi line with its six underground stations and the 8.5 km Songshan line with eight underground stations in the first quarter next year.
It expects to complete the projects in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

The contract was granted by Marubeni Corporation, and is the third ST Electronics has won from them in recent years. Other recent contracts include work to design and install electronics systems for the Taiwan Taoyuan Airport MRT, and for Turkey's Marmaray Line.

ST Electronics has been involved in the rail transport systems of Taipei and Kaohsiung since the early 1990s and also helped to rebuild rail systems destroyed by typhoons in the early 2000s.
